SUMMARY:Shelby Doyle Architecture Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Shelby Elizabeth Doyle\, AIA is a registered architect and Associate Professor of Architecture where she is the Stan G. Thurston Professor of Design Build at Iowa State University College of Design\, co-founder of the ISU Computation & Construction Lab (CCL)\, and director of the ISU Architectural Robotics Lab (ARL). The CCL and ARL the result of Doyle’s ISU Presidential Impact Hire to rethink digital fabrication and design-build. The CCL works to connect developments in computation to the challenges of construction: through teaching\, research\, and outreach. \nThe central hypothesis of CCL and Doyle’s work is that computation in architecture is a material\, pedagogical\, and social project; computation is both informed by and productive of architectural cultures. This hypothesis is explored\, through the fabrication of built projects and materialized in computational practices. The CCL is invested in questioning the role of education and pedagogy in replicating existing technological inequities\, and in pursuing the potential for technology in architecture as a space of\, and for\, gender equity. \nDoyle is currently a Mellon Research Fellow for the Canadian Centre for Architecture’s The Digital Now: Architecture and Intersectionality\, the 2023 President of ACADIA – the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture – and a 2022-25 At-Large-Director for the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). \nDoyle received a Fulbright Fellowship to Cambodia\, a Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design\, and a Bachelor of Science in architecture from the University of Virginia. \nHer work at ISU has been recognized by several national awards: the Association for Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Creative Achievement Award\, the Autodesk / Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) Emerging Research Award\, and the Building Technology Educators Society (BTES) Emerging Faculty Award. She has published in the Journal of Architectural Education (JAE)\, the International Journal of Architectural Computing\, and Columbia University’s Avery Review\, as well as in proceedings for national and international meetings.

SUMMARY:Ron Henderson Architecture Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Presented by UT San Antonio School of Architecture & Planning \nRon Henderson a landscape architect and educator. He is founding principal of Lirio Landscape Architecture. Recent award-winning projects include the Gardens of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (Boston\, Massachusetts)\, City Walk (Providence\, Rhode Island)\, Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery (Nantes\, France)\, and Jiuzhou Qingyan roof garden of the Chinese Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010 (China). \nLirio has been recognized with over 30 international\, national\, and regional awards for design\, planning\, preservation\, and research. Most recently\, he is landscape architect for the grounds of the Elizabethan Theater at Chateau d’Hardelot (Condette\, France) which was nominated for the 2017 European Union Urban Prize – Mies van der Rohe Award and received World Architecture News’ Best Wood Building of the Year. \nHe is Professor and Director of the Master of Landscape Architecture + Urbanism Program at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago. There\, he is a prime investigator on “The Driverless City Project\,” a multi-disciplinary research initiative funded by the National Science Foundation and the Nayar Prize\, which investigates the urban design implications of driverless vehicles. Additional research investigates “Long and Narrow” urban landscape projects. He held prior academic appointments at Harvard University\, Pennsylvania State University\, Tsinghua University\, Roger Williams University\, and Rhode Island School of Design. \nAt IIT\, he is the inaugural Director of Research for the Alphawood Arboretum and was academic advisor for the student-led initiative that established the arboretum and inspired $2.6m in philanthropy. He authored the accreditation application and leads a botanical and horticultural research collaborations with neighborhood\, regional\, and national organizations. \nHe is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects\, a US-Japan Friendship Commission Creative Artist Fellow\, a National Park Service Artist-in-Residence\, and a Senior Fellow of Garden and Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks. He has lectured widely in North America\, Europe\, and Asia. \nHe is author of Analysis of the Traditional Chinese Garden (2014 co-translation from Chinese into English by SpringerNATURE of seminal book by PENG Yigang)\, 30 TREES (Birkhauser\, 2024)\, The Gardens of Suzhou (University of Pennsylvania Press\, 2013) and many articles\, book chapters\, essays\, and criticism on contemporary landscape architecture topics.

DESCRIPTION:Gregg Bissonette\, winner of “Best All-Around Drummer” in Modern Drummer’s 2023 Readers Poll\, is one of the most versatile musicians in the business. Since 2008\, Gregg has been performing around the world in the All Starr Band with his drumming hero\, Ringo Starr. Bissonette has played with David Lee Roth\, James Taylor\, Santana (on his Grammy-winning album Supernatural)\, Don Henley\, Joe Satriani\, Andrea Bocelli\, ELO\, Maynard Ferguson\, Spinal Tap\, Steve Lukather\, The Reddcoats\, and countless others. Gregg has recorded for numerous films (including The Bucket List\, Finding Nemo\, Best in Show\, The Bourne Supremacy\, The Devil Wears Prada\, The 40-Year-Old Virgin)\, TV shows (Friends)\, and the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert and video. DESCRIPTION:UT San Antonio School of Music and UTSA Arts presents “Keys Across America” an all-American recital to celebrate USA 250\, with rarely heard music from Second New England School Composers (Amy Beach\, Arthur Foote\, Edward MacDowell)\, as well as classics from Ives\, Copland\, Price\, and the funky 1st Piano Sonata by Ned Rorem. \n  \nMore about the artist: \nRecipient of the 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant\, 30-year-old American pianist Mackenzie Melemed has emerged as one of the most distinctive musical voices of his generation\, admired for his nuanced interpretations\, technical finesse\, and deep artistic sensibility. Hailed as “an excellent young pianist” by the New York Times\, Melemed enjoyed an abundance of early stage experience\, with over 500 performances to his name by age 13\, undoubtedly one of the most seasoned pianists among his peers. Whether in recital\, chamber music\, or orchestral settings\, his performances are marked by a desire to communicate\, to reveal\, and to connect—with the score\, with fellow musicians\, and most of all\, with the audience. \nBorn in Massachusetts\, Melemed began piano studies at age four\, and soon after was performing weekly for senior citizens. At the age of five\, he made a national appearance on The Rosie O’Donnell Show\, and by nine\, he was headlining a 60-show run at the Tropicana Resort in Atlantic City\, New Jersey. From nine to thirteen\, he was invited annually to perform at the White House during the Holiday Open House celebrations—experiences that proved instrumental in shaping his identity as a performer. This wide-ranging exposure fostered a deep comfort on stage and a natural ease in sharing music. \nMelemed’s artistry goes beyond performance\, combining music and storytelling into memorable experiences for both newcomers and seasoned listeners. Through thoughtfully curated programs that blend familiar works with rare discoveries\, he creates intimate connections with audiences\, sharing insights that illuminate the music. His vision extends beyond the concert hall: he aims to spark curiosity for lesser-known composers while inspiring future pianists to explore uncharted repertoire\, gradually expanding what we consider essential to the classical canon.

SUMMARY:Architecture As Public Art with Roberto Behar & Rosario Marquardt
DESCRIPTION:Presented by UTSA Arts & UT San Antonio School of Architecture and Planning \nR&R STUDIOS creates architecture and artworks that perform as social sculptures and tools for the pursuit of happiness. \nThey weave together visual arts\, architecture\, design\, landscape and the city. The ambition of thier practice is to reclaim\, enhance and develop the public dimension of the city. They seek to produce a public architecture that highlights the communal and civic dimension of life and erases boundaries between art and everyday life. They understand thier work as experiments in public space\, models of possibilities that might imbue the construction of the city with new meaning and emotion. \nThe work of R&R STUDIOS has been exhibited in galleries\, and in group and solo museum shows\, and is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires\, the Archives d’Architecture Moderne in Brussels\, the Pérez Art Museum Miami\, Madison MOCA\, and the Princeton University Art Museum\, among others. R&R STUDIOS artworks have been featured in over 350 publications worldwide and five monographs (R&R Alphabet\, The Peace Project\, M\, The Living Room\, and Museum Works). A comprehensive monograph of R&R STUDIOS is scheduled for publication by Park Books\, Zurich\, in 2027. \nThier large-scale social sculptures create theaters for everyday life\, platforms for life to unfold\, they inspire togetherness and imagination\, inviting people to inhabit\, move through\, and engage with public spaces in ways that reveal the marvel of the real and imagine the city as our shared home. Our most recognized artworks include the biggest “M” in the world in Miami; All Together Now in downtown Denver; The Living Room\, our iconic Miami home turned inside out; Bésame Mucho and SUPERNOVA at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival; Building Blocks\, a pocket square in Seattle; I Love You\, a proposal to poetically transform the Miami skyline. \nMost recently\, they  completed Peace & Love\, a Parkland High-school Memorial with Bloomberg Philanthropies and the City of Coral Springs\, Dream Palace for Lollapalooza Argentina.We also unveiled three new public artworks for the Princeton University Art Museum\, documented in the book The Home We Share: Three Social Sculptures for Princeton University (Park Books\, Zurich\, 2025)\, and Beauty for All\, a billboard and visual manifesto for the 2025 Chicago Architecture Biennial.

SUMMARY:Fronterizx: Art by M. Jenea Sanchez &  Gabriela Muñoz with Jenelle Esparza
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: January 28\, 6 pm – 8 pm\n\nGallery hours: Thursdays-Saturdays\, 10-3:00\n\n\n\nFronterizx: Art by M. Jenea Sanchez and Gabriela Muñoz with Jenelle Esparza focuses on twenty-first century shared and socially-engaged art practices. This exhibition features work created by the Fronterizx Collective founded by Sanchez and Muñoz during their first collaboration in 2009 on the Arizona/Mexico borderline in a project titled La Tapiz Fronteriza de La Virgen de Guadalupe and includes contemporary artworks such as the video Caldo de Pollo and the photographic series Living Altar. In addition\, this exhibition features a new collaborative project between Esparza and Fronterizx. This is the first exhibition in Texas of the Fronterizx Collective\, as well as the artists’ first collaboration with San Antonio-based artist Jenelle Esparza.\n\nFronterizx Collective is driven by the artists’ lived experiences as women of color working in the interstitial space of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. Fronterizx is committed to the representation and implication of brown female bodies from their own lived experiences situated within the Sonora and Chihuahua desert ecologies. Their projects\, installations\, and exhibitions have appeared on the U.S.-Mexico borderline and museums including the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, Wheelwright Museum\, and Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez\, Mexico. In 2023 they were awarded the Arlene and Morton Scult Artist Award by the Phoenix Art Museum and a 2024 USA Artist Fellowship.\n\nSanchez was born and raised in the Arizona and Sonora frontera and Muñoz migrated through the U.S.-Mexico borderlands to Phoenix. Esparza is a Corpus Christi and South Texas native. Esparza\, Sanchez\, and Muñoz were introduced as recipients of the 2024 US Latinx Fellowship.

DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dr. Scott A. Sherer and Lizzy Hayman\n\nThis exhibition brings together works from the individual creative careers of Jayne Lawrence and Leigh Anne Lester and a variety of materials that reference their collaborative endeavors in cactusBRA and cactusBARN\, the influential galleries they founded in San Antonio. While pursuing unique themes and perspectives\, Lawrence and Lester bring critical attention to the possibilities of imagination to transform expectations that structure standard knowledge systems. Lester’s works often have a foundation in considerations of the natural world whereas Lawrence’s works often develop in consideration of challenges to narratives that influence subjectivity and social engagement. SUMMARY:Seek and Hide Gallery Talk with Eleanor Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Join us in gallery for an Artist Talk with Eleanor Anderson. \nMore about Eleanor:  \nThrough my art\, I engage in world-making through the process of play and material-errantry. My form of world-making uses craft traditions as a flexible constraint; I collaborate with materials and colors to achieve a coherence and consistency finely attuned to my intuitive judgment. I look for openings in the making process where I can ply confident imperfections and deviations\, subverting fixed expectations of the tradition or technique at hand. I often use bright colors and repeating patterns as a way of injecting each project with evidence of the exuberant aliveness I feel when making art. My practice seeks to alleviate daily doldrums and spiritless ways of living – instead\, transforming objects and spaces into paratelic experiences. I gift these works to the viewer as an optimistic nudge towards joy\, connection and a playful awareness of how the larger world could be. \nWebsite & CV: Eleanor Anderson
