SUMMARY:Puro Conjunto: Border(less) Sound
DESCRIPTION:“Puro Conjunto: Border(less) Sound” celebrates how this uniquely Texan genre continues to thrive in San Antonio\, the region\, and beyond\, connecting past and present through its layered musical heritage. Conjunto is more than music — it is a living record of cultural exchange\, community identity\, and artistic innovation.  \n The exhibit explores conjunto music as one of Texas’s most vital and enduring cultural expressions. Rooted in working-class life\, conjunto tells a story of migration\, encounter and exchange\, resilience\, and celebration.  \n The exhibit will highlight the people\, places\, and traditions at the heart of conjunto. Museum visitors will see conjunto pioneer Bruno Villarreal’s accordion\, along with artifacts central to the genre—some of which will be on display for the first time\, plus loans from the community and other organizations. Additionally\, visitors are invited to get hands-on with a selection of musical instruments at an interactive station. \nThis exhibit is generously supported by the Summerlee Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: August 28\, 6 – 8 pm \nArtist Talk: September 26\, 1 – 3 pm \nThe exhibition Exquisite Entropy: Photographs by Trish Simonite\, 1972 – 2025 offers audiences the opportunity to enjoy exemplary works from multiple periods produced across Simonite’s celebrated career. Curator Paula Owen has chosen 125 works that present Simonite’s fascination with the paradoxes that historical narratives may carry forward information from the past into new contexts of meaning and that photographic images may inspire new contemplation far beyond the time and place of their creation. As a transnational artist\, Simonite’s transformations of scenes and elements of natural and built environments from the English countryside\, Greek islands\, and Texas honky tonks. \nTrish Simonite was born and raised in Norwich\, Norfolk\, England. She married and moved to Houston\, Texas\, in 1968. She received a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. from the University of Texas in San Antonio in 1984 and 1987. SUMMARY:Nuestra Delta Mágica: Reclaiming the love for our hometowns on the South Texas border with Nansi Guevara
DESCRIPTION:If you grew up on the South Texas border\, the false narrative of there is nothing here permeated both\nin our self-identities and our understanding of the place we live. This is a common lie that seeps into\nour daily lives and invites us to leave. There is nothing here\, so that means we are nothing\, and we\nneed to leave our community to become someone. Nuestra Delta Magica traces this false narrative to\ncolonization and the myths built around it that help maintain it. Believing that there is nothing there\nabout any place on the planet comes from the white settler colonial imaginary. During this session\, we\nwill learn about destructive companies threatening to dispossess and harm people in the Rio Grande\nValley. This keynote will invite us to remember the beauty and ecological abundance of the Rio\nGrande Delta\, and reclaim the river and its delta as a lifeway\, as public space\, and a site of\nconnection.

SUMMARY:Community Devising Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Explore devised theater with Turnip Ensemble Theater at this FREE Devised Theater Workshop on September 13\, 2-4pm at the Amy Shelton McNutt Historical Arts Center. Open to ages 16 and up (with a parent or guardian)\, this workshop will present an introduction to the tools and methods the Turnip ensemble uses to create brand new\, original theater performances using words\, stories\, and movement. Participants will be introduced to Turnip’s current in-process project and invited to enter the theatermaking process by sharing their own perspectives\, stories\, and experiences as vital contributors to the piece.

Along the way\, you’ll discover how generations of musicians have experimented with new sounds\, highlighting the fiddle’s role in a deeply rooted Texas tradition. Panel discussion moderated by ITC head curator Bianca Alvarez\, finishing with a performance from conjunto musicians Zeth Lara and Aaron Salinas.

SUMMARY:Actors From the London Stage’s Performance of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing
DESCRIPTION:UT San Antonio will be hosting the Actors From the London Stage’s Performance of Much Ado About Nothing on September 30\, October 2\, and October 3 in 2026 at 7:30 PM.  \nCount Claudio falls in love with Hero\, the daughter of his host. Hero’s cousin Beatrice (a confirmed spinster) and Benedict (an eternal bachelor) are each duped into believing the other is in love with them. Claudio is deceived by a malicious plot and denounces Hero as unchaste before they marry. She faints and is believed dead\, but recovers to be proved innocent by a chance discovery. Benedict wins Beatrice’s love defending her cousin’s honour\, and to his surprise\, Claudio is reunited with Hero\, who he believed dead.

DESCRIPTION:Explore the rich history of the Son Jarocho musical tradition from Veracruz\,Mexico.  Attendees will gain hands-on experience playing the Jarana\, learning to write and sing versada in the distinctive Son Jarocho style\, and dancing zapateado.
